Vonage Doomed?
I have been following the case between Verizon and Vonage. Verizon sued Vonage a few months back on the grounds that Vonage is using its VOIP related patents for business without taking permission from Verizon.
The trouble is that the patents Verizon holds are so generic that going around them by flipping a switch is not an option. When designing their network, they used generic equipment available from Cisco and other providers. For now, Vonage has been ordered not to serve any new customers. Vonage was already in trouble because of losses in previous qtrs due to competition from cable companies.
I personally like Vonage’s service a lot. This one is probably going to kill it.
But the problems won’t end here. Now that Verizon has a win against the most popular VOIP provider out there, they can go and start suing other players in the industry, effectively aim-and-shoot type tactics.
Will be interesting to see where this goes.
